This was the key message at an ‘Exploring Exports’ forum attended by YBM in Molong last week. The event was hosted by RDA Central West and Cabonne Council and featured a number of speakers, including the federal Minister for Agriculture, David Littleproud, and the federal member for Calare, Andrew Gee.
The message was clear. Australia, with its population of 25 million, are producing enough food for 75 million people, and the Central West is perfectly located to access an abundance of overseas markets. Canberra airport has been carefully designed with export in mind, and with no curfews in place, product can leave the Central West of an afternoon and be landed in Singapore by 5 am the next morning.
In addition to the Ministers, speakers represented NSW Treasury, the Export Council of Australia and the Head of Aviation from Canberra Airport. There are a number of grants available for small and medium businesses, both at state and federal level, with export being recognized as playing a large role in Australia’s financial recovery from Covid-19. There is support for businesses who are trying to grow current markets, re-enter markets post-Covid, post-drought or post-bushfire, or for those trying to find partners along the supply chain in the early stages of their export strategy.
Lastly, these initiatives apply beyond the production of fresh produce. Cabonne Council proudly brand themselves as Australia’s Food Basket, and the forum last week appropriately focused on this. However, the opportunities equally apply to businesses in manufacturing, technology and a number of other industries.
